How to Use Your Gelli Plate to Make Spanish Tile Coasters

Gelli Arts just came out with a new kit, and I am loving it! Today I made these coasters using their Lisbon tile image transfer kit, and the possibilities are endless.

If you’ve been following along lately, you know how much I love my Gelli plate. 🤩 I’ve finally mastered image transfer, and this Spanish tile project is a great way to combine image transfers with functional art.

Transferring a Spanish tile design onto a wooden coaster only takes a few easy steps:

Step-by-Step: Making Spanish Tile Coasters with a Gelli Plate

Step 1 – Prepare the Gelli Plate
Apply a thin layer of acrylic paint to the surface of your Gelli plate. The goal is even coverage, not too thick, not too thin. Pro tip: Don’t let it dry for too long! In this step, paint matters so use this brand for image transfers.

Step 2 – Add Your Tile Image
Place your laser-printed Spanish tile image face down onto the painted surface of your Gelli plate.

Step 3 – Apply Pressure
Gently rub the back with your hands for 10-15 seconds with medium pressure. Be sure to watch your edges to make sure they transfer cleanly as well.

Step 4 – Transfer to the Coaster
Carefully lift the paper & press the design onto your coaster. Once you're satisfied after smoothing it out, let it dry. You can lift one small corner to see if the transfer is successful.

Step 5 – Seal the Design
When your napkin is completely dry, you can begin the process of decoupaging the napkin onto the coaster. Apply a thin layer of mod podge using a foam brush. Don’t forget the sides and the edges. Wrap the napkins around the coaster and gently tuck the napkin around the sides. Wait until they are fully dry to remove the excess paper. I find that using a small amount of water helps the napkin to tear easily. Add another coat of mod podge on top. I used the dimensional magic as an added step to make it look shiny like a real tile.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use high-quality laser prints (not inkjet) to make sure your image transfers clean. See my article on image transfers here.

  • If you want your design to be brighter or more colorful, feel free to use an ombre effect or mix multiple colors. You can also add color using paint pens. I used paint pens in my seashell project.

  • Don't forget to seal with Mod Podge to make your coasters durable!

Final Thoughts on your Gelli Plate DIY

I had so much fun making these, and I love how the Spanish tile design completely transforms a simple coaster. If you’ve got a Gelli plate & a little acrylic paint on hand, I promise this project is both easy & satisfying. Happy crafting!

FAQ: DIY Spanish Tiles

  • Laser prints are the best option when making Spanish tile coasters with a Gelli plate. Inkjet prints are prone to smear & don’t transfer cleanly.

  • Acrylic paint works best. It dries quickly & gives bright, bold results when transferring tile patterns.

  • Yes! Sealing your coaster with Mod Podge or Dimensional Fluid will protect the design & make it water-resistant. You’ll be glad you didn’t skip this step!

  • Yes! Experiment & see what textures you like best on your Gelli plate. Just make sure to smooth them carefully so they don’t tear.

  • Drying time for your coasters depends on the thickness of your paint, but a good general rule is usually 1–2 hours. Always let your design fully dry before sealing - if it’s sticky or tacky, wait a little longer!
