To start gel printing, you need four things: a gel plate, a brayer, acrylic paint, and paper. Stencils, stamps, and markers are the fun extras for when you're ready to play. Here are all the Gelli printing supplies I use in my studio, with links so you can grab what you need and get printing.
Just Starting? Grab These Four:
- An 8"x10" Gelli plate
- A short brayer
- Deli paper
- Any acrylic paint (my favorites are below).
Gel Printing Plates
Your plate is the one supply you can't skip. An 8"x10" is the easiest size to learn on. Go bigger for posters, or smaller for cards and journal pages.
Brayers
A brayer rolls your paint thin and even across the plate. The short one is great for small plates. The long one covers a big plate in one pass.
Tools
Paper for Gelli Printing
Each paper gives you a different look. Cardstock is sturdy and beginner friendly. Tea paper and deli paper are thin and see-through, which makes them perfect for collage and layering.
Inks
Textures
Press stamps into the paint on your plate to pull out texture, or stamp on top of a finished print.
Stencils
Lay a stencil on your painted plate to mask out shapes and patterns.
Cleaning
Clean your plate between colors and after every session so it keeps printing beautifully.
Acrylic Paints
Any acrylic paint works on a gel plate. These are the three brands I keep on my shelf.
Markers
Paint markers add drawn details and doodles on top of a dry print.
